This is my first Danielle Steel novel and it will be my last. The story was captivating about Holocaust survivors and making a new life in New York, but the writing??? Does Steel, with all her popularity, not need an editor? Declarative sentence after declarative sentence right to the end. It read like a first draft that was quickly hammered out on the computer. She would get back to editing later but never did because her publisher was clamoring for the next book. -- It's sad when a very popular author doesn't care enough about her writing to give it another go-over before she turns it in because anything she writes will be snapped up. -- I gave it three stars because the story was, indeed, interesting. It would be such a good read if the author demanded it back from the publisher and worked on the editing more.

I thought I'd try one more Steel novel...I so enjoyed them during the years of Palamino, et. al., but except for the wonderful story of Jakob and Emmanuelle Stein, the story focused on narcissistic, self-serving young adults (and I use the term loosely), who had everything money could buy, but never really developed a life of love and joy with four beautiful children. I wanted to pull the children from the pages of the book and hug each of them. The epilogue mentioned how well the children were doing in their 20s. Unfortunately, I doubt their ability to be family-oriented. While I do believe that Julie had severe postpartum depression, with all her money, her four nannies, and a distant husband, surely someone could have seen her pain. Shallow people...lost lives. Sorry, but this will probably be the last DS novel I read.

I felt that I was reading 2 books, not just 1. And I mean this in a good way.I highly recommend this book to all.

Typical Danielle Steele. I always love to read her books. She is a great storyteller; I never get bored with her writing. This book did not disappoint. Couldn't put it down. A lovely story about love, courage, loyalty and family!

LOVED every word! The story was great from the first word, to the last. ILoved the Holocaust being part of it and the survivors behind it.
